Using Dermal Fillers on Your Temples

Fill them in to bring them out!

Susan Stevens Tanne, MD

Using Dermal Fillers on Your Temples

When you look in the mirror, you may not notice the appearance of sunken temples, but this can make you look dramatically older. Filling this forgotten area of the face can help you look years younger.

As you age, your temple areas lose fat, leading to a “hollow” look. There is even a terrible name for this appearance, the “peanut head”!

My patients come to me for a variety of filler treatments in different places, but getting their temples filled isn’t often what they are thinking about.

Most people don’t even know that this area can be filled but love the end results.

Treating this area also has other benefits:

Reverse signs of aging

What many patients don’t know is that just like filling in the more talked-about, wrinkle-prone areas of the face, temple fillers can postpone signs of aging, too. When fillers are used correctly, they can lift skin, because when you lose fat, muscle, or bone, it makes your skin droop.

Lift the brow

Filling the temples can modify more than just the forehead area. There is a dramatic effect that filling the temples has on aging due to the way it lifts the eyebrows and sides of your eyes. If you don’t like the position of your brows, filling the temples can bring the brows up to a more flattering position on the face, which lifts the drooping.

The additional volume of dermal fillers can firm up and add volume in the skin, reducing the appearance of wrinkles, often called “crow’s feet”, that accumulate around the eyes.

Fill out a thinning face

It is important to consider the areas surrounding the temple and blend the temple-cheek junction with filler, adding some volume to the cheeks and cheek bone to give the most natural, even look.

I like to choose from several different fillers when treating this area. Restylane Lyft and Restylane Defyne are hyaluronic acid fillers which give instant results and last up to about one year. I also love to use Radiesse to fill this area, which lasts about one to two years and acts as a collagen stimulator as well as filler. Each of these can help the face look more oval in shape and be used to fill hollowness, which is more obvious in thin, aging patients.

The end result is a more youthful, healthier looking face!
